Varicose Veins

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are one of the common diseases that affects one in three people at some time in their lives, and there is a large proportion of patients who suffer from an advanced degree of venous insufficiency accompanied by open wounds and disability in the legs Functionality.
It mostly affects the veins of the legs; This is because walking and standing for long periods of time increases pressure on the veins in the lower body.
It is worth noting that varicose veins are mostly harmless, sometimes cause pain, swelling and pain in the affected leg.
Many people have a mild type of varicose veins as a cosmetic problem only, and for others, varicose veins can cause very severe pain and discomfort, and can sometimes lead to more severe and dangerous complications and problems.
In some cases, developing other diseases related to blood flow in the body.

Symptoms

There are many symptoms that characterize varicose veins, including the following:
  • Pain after sitting or standing for long periods of time and the severity of the pain increases at night.
  • Swollen ankles and legs.
  • The appearance of prominent and twisted veins in the legs and thighs.
  • Muscle spasms and leg cramps, especially when standing up suddenly.
  • Heaviness in the legs and feeling uncomfortable while walking, especially in the evening, is more common among women.
  • Exposure to persistent itching around a blood vessel.
  • High skin temperature is one of the most common symptoms in men and is accompanied by a tingling sensation sometimes.
  • Change the colour of the skin surrounding the area affected by varicose legs to brown or blue.
  • The appearance of some skin ulcers near the ankle.
  • Capillaries dilatation in the affected leg, causing what is known as spider veins to appear.
  • The area bleeds for a longer period than usual if it has been cut or damaged. Stasis dermatitis, which is the presence of redness, dryness, and itching in the affected area. Restless legs syndrome.
  • White atrophy: Atrophy blanche is represented by the appearance of white spots like scars on the ankle.

Causes and Risk Factors of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are due to many reasons, which are as follows:
  • The presence of genetic or genetic factors and the presence of a medical history in the family of varicose veins.
    1. The appearance of varicose veins in one family member increases the risk of infection for other people.
  • Malfunction of the venous valves.
  • Weakness in calf muscle contraction This is a result of paralysis, sitting for a long time, and not exercising, which causes a state of venous hypertension.
  • Suffering of deep vein thrombosis.
  • Aging and aging diseases: As a person ages, the veins lose their flexibility, which makes them expand, and the valves in the veins may become weaker, allowing the blood that should flow to the heart to return, and thus blood collects in the veins, which leads to their widening.
  • Lack of physical activity and lack of interest in practicing activities and exercises properly.
  • Increased pressure inside the abdomen or pelvis.
This prevents blood from flowing smoothly from the leg veins to the pelvis, then the main vein in the abdomen, and this happens for several reasons, as follows:
Pregnancy: Varicose veins develop in some pregnant women, as pregnancy increases the volume of blood in the body but reduces its flow from the legs to the pelvis. This change in blood circulation aims to support the foetus, but it may nonetheless cause an unfortunate side effect of widening the veins in the legs.
Varicose veins that develop during pregnancy usually improve without any medical treatment within three months after delivery.
Excessive obesity: is one of the main causes of varicose veins, because the excessive weight gain may affect the feet and increase the weight on the knee and leg veins, which makes the veins appear dark blue or violet, and these veins may also be exposed to the explosion, and for this, care must be taken to get rid of excess weight and excess body fat.
Tumours in the pelvis: This causes increased pressure in the venous system, and fluid begins to accumulate in soft tissue, which causes damage to the lymphatic system, microcirculation disorders, fibrin deposits, skin cell damage, and the development of ulcers.

Varicose Veins Diagnosis

To diagnose varicose veins, the doctor performs a physical examination that also includes observing the legs when standing to see if there is swelling, and sometimes the doctor may also ask to describe what the pain is in the legs.
There are many diagnostic methods used by the vascular doctor to detect the most important causes and symptoms of varicose veins, and accordingly, the methods of treating varicose veins are determined.
  1. Tnitially, a clinical medical examination is performed.
  2. Duplex ultrasound scan, as this examination helps the doctor choose the appropriate method of treating varicose veins and reduces the possibility of recurring this disease in the future.
The duplex examination also works by ultrasound to determine the direction of blood flow and thus determine Exactly where the blood moves against its normal direction.

Treatment

Some people may live with varicose veins in one way or another if the pain is not severe, but this condition may cause complications, including eczema, and thrombophlebitis, an inflammation of the veins, sores due to fluid leaking from the enlarged vein into the surrounding tissue, which required treatment.
The case of varicose veins does not recover on its own.
There are many different treatments, but it is important to find the right treatment method that suits the affected person, because varicose veins itself is characterized by many different patterns.
There are several ways in which the problem of veins can be identified and treated, and each method has its pros and cons.
We will discuss together about the most famous and effective treatment methods in the treatment of varicose veins, which are as follows:

Prevention of Varicose Veins

There is no way to completely prevent varicose veins, however improving blood circulation and tightening the muscles may reduce the risk of developing varicose veins.
Varicose veins and spider veins occur in many cases with age, and their incidence is attributed to several factors that cannot be avoided, including:
  • heredity or family history
  • Obesity and overweight
  • Standing or sitting for long periods.
Therefore, despite the difficulty of avoiding varicose veins, it is possible to slow the rate of exacerbation of visible varicose veins by following the following tips:
  • Weight Loss.
  • Reduce the amount of sodium (salt) in the diet.
  • Regular exercise, especially walking, to improve blood circulation.
  • Avoid sitting or standing for long periods, and try to move every 30 minutes.
  • Taking regular sitting breaks for workers in jobs that require standing on their feet.
  • Wearing appropriate clothes: such as avoiding wearing tight clothes and socks that put pressure on the waist, legs, or groin area because they reduce blood flow.
  • Raising the legs when sitting to the level of the hips, and raising them above the level of the heart during sleep.
  • Wear medical compression stockings.
  • Avoid high-heeled shoes (especially for women), as it puts great pressure on the veins of the legs and causes varicose veins.
If you think that you have varicose veins, we advise you to consult a vascular pathologist and surgeon to obtain an accurate medical diagnosis and discuss the available treatment options.

Post Surgery Care

In cases where the specialist intends to treat the injured, he often recommends following self-care tips for approximately three to six months, and among these tips are the following:
  • Regular exercise.
  • Avoid standing for long periods.
  • Elevate the affected leg when lying down and rest.
  • Use of compression stockings: Compression stockings, after asking and consulting the doctor, because they are not suitable for all patients, it is necessary to undergo a test to check whether they are suitable for the patient, and despite their ability to relieve the symptoms and signs that the patient complains about, their effect in preventing the progression of Varicose veins and their worsening and preventing the emergence of new varicose veins is not clear until now.

Botox injections are performed in a medical office or a cosmetic clinic. The skin is cleansed, and a local anesthetic or ice may be applied to minimize any discomfort. Using a very fine needle, Botox is injected into specific muscles in precise locations. The procedure typically takes only a few minutes, and there is minimal downtime or recovery involved.

The effects of Botox injections are not immediate but gradually appear over a few days to a week. The muscles become less active, and the wrinkles in the treated areas gradually smooth out. The results typically last around 3 to 4 months, but this can vary depending on individual factors, the dose administered, and the specific treatment area.

I recently had my root canals done by Dr. Padma Gandi, and I must say that she is best in her field. She quickly did my multiple root canals, and was very careful and focused while doing them. The good part is that Dr. Padma was so considerate of the pain I was feeling, and tried her best that I wont feel it during the procedure or afterwards. I highly highly recommend her for any dental procedures.
